Q&A

List of frequently asked Questions with Answers

What is your experience?
Many years of "still" photography as a hobby, with 7 years fashion and swimwear.  Started with family members (like most people), and then events like volleyball, tennis, and auto shows.  Most recently fashion and swimwear.

Who do you photograph?
Female models, mostly ages 15-23.  Beginners to experienced, with many first-timers.

What type of equipment do you use?
35mm slr cameras, with print film.  Color, black & white, and black & white color.  Some digital.

You gave me an offer to model, how long is the offer good?
Anywhere from 1-day to maybe 1 week.  Photographers need to update their portfolios periodically...So when they are looking for someone, it means in the near future.

What is Time For Prints (TFP)?
(Also called Trade For Prints.)  Simply means exchanging time between model and photographer for prints / photographs.  This is a great way to build portfolios and add experience.

What age is best to start modeling?
For females, between ages 15-16 since you have an idea of what you are doing.  Also height is less of a factor for teens versus adults.

Do I need to bring a parent?
If you are a minor (under 18 years of age), Yes.  Sometimes a permission agreement is acceptable.

Should I wait until I am 18 years old before modeling?
Generally speaking, No.  Although this requires some help from your parents, the best chance for females is between ages 15-17.  Also, it's more difficult to control your weight after 18.

What is a Model Release?
A contract that releases or grants rights to photographs taken during the photoshoot.  Releases vary, depending upon the rights requested or granted.  Without a release, rights are very limited and I would not even do a TFP photoshoot.

I'm a beginner, should I try a modeling school?
No.  You are paying for classes and overpriced photographs.  Expect to pay $1200-$1500 plus "Add-Ons", getting your bill to $2000-$2500.  They're now trying to push a $6000 package.  Better deals are TFP's, Group Shoots, Community Colleges, makeup seminars, and rental videos.

Are modeling schools agencies?
No.  They are schools, Not agencies.  They charge for classes.  They will Not help you find work.

Should I pay for photographs?
If you have the money and the sample work is what you want, go for it!  There is nothing wrong with paying a reasonable amount.  Even some TFP's require a small payment for expenses.  You may also purchase additional prints / enlargements from photographers.

Should I work with more than 1 photographer?
Yes.  Photographers have different styles and 1 photographer should not make your entire portfolio.  Surprisingly, many models think that 1 photoshoot is their entire life...It's not!  Just because you did 1 photoshoot, doesn't make you a star.  Work with different photographers and gain experience.
